My comment: I very much agree with your definition of building a social media network. We can establish connections with friends and interested people in social media. I also very much hope to make friends through social media.

My comment: Nice layout! As you said, we need to pay attention to the authenticity of the content when disseminating information.

My comment: I very much agree with your point of view. LinkedIn is indeed a very good digital platform to develop a professional network of students. In a group work, I used LINKEDIN to discuss with group members and found that LinkedIn makes it easy for group members to familiarize themselves with each other and complete assignments faster and more effectively.

Hi Alison,
I agree with your point of view about Facebook is a great source for expanding professional networks. As a student of Uvic, I often use Facebook to get in touch with students who have taken the same class this semester and share their learning experiences. I think Facebook is a great educational social media platform
my comment: HI Qing, I also like to share my views and experiences on social apps, but I prefer to share my daily life. I would very much hope that more people will get to know me and become friends with me.
My comment: Hi Kayat, I often follow people who like to share their lives on social media. I like to go to the restaurant they recommend to eat. It is much more convenient than finding a strange restaurant for me. After reading your blog, I really want to be friends with you.
My comment: I really like the theme that you want to create a social media campaign in PLN. Food is a very attractive topic, because we need food every day, which can easily resonate with the public.
My comment: Thanks for sharing this post! I very much agree with your point of view. The vast majority of users of Tiktok and Instagram are young people. This is very conducive to the development of your theme-fashion design.
My comment: I very much agree with your point of view to build a reliable PLN is to use reliable resources. The authenticity of resources is very important in PLN.
My blog: Thank you for your post! I really like your example of connecting with life. As you said, as students and social contributors, what we can do is to amplify and share voices that support different views.
My comment: I like your example very much. In life, PLN does magnify the views of others, but it also facilitates our understanding of the diversification of PLN. So as to help us learn better and establish our own values.
My comment: Hello, KAYATCHEUNG
Thank you for your blog, I like your sentence “Equality is helpful for people who not willing or be afraid to show their true thoughts.” I think it expresses your views on equality very well.
My comment: HI Ziwang I very much agree with what you said that Twitter and Facebook are social media platforms that are good for education. We can see that people with a certain reputation are speaking out for some disadvantaged groups. This is a great help for young people to build their own values.
My comment: I very much agree with your view that media literacy is to help people identify what is right and what is wrong. This is the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. In today’s society, everyone needs that.
My comment: As you said, PLN does provide career opportunities. My PLN also helped me meet different people and brought more opportunities to my work.
My comment : I very much agree with your point of view and I also hope that the geographical restrictions can be lifted. Limited geographical location will have a great impact on our expansion of our PLN.

Consider our guest and their steps in building a podcast relying on a PLN. Can your PLN be used to help professional development post-course? If yes, how? If no, what limitations exist?

Yes, PLN can be used to help professional development post- course. Because I can establish exchanges with people in the same major or in the same field, expand my knowledge reserve by listening to other people’s opinions, and learn from the experience of predecessors in my field by establishing exchanges. Learning from these experiences can make me develop better. For example, my major is economics. Even after I finish this course, I know how to use social media to learn about the latest economics. And you can also share your knowledge to provide help to those in need.

Can your PLN be relied on to open professional opportunities?

Of course, PLN can be relied on the open professional opportunities. We can meet more individuals thanks to PLN. Establishing contacts with people in the same field can also help us become more professional in the field by allowing us to share our experiences. It will also pave the way for more development and job prospects in the future. By creating communication, people from other areas can comprehend the ways and methods of functioning in various situations. They can create contacts in their present majors and be considered possible consumers in the future thanks to these contacts.

What is media literacy?

According to “Learning for life in our times”, Trilling and Fadel said that Media literacy is refers to the medium of delivering messages (print, graphics, animation, audio, video, Web sites, and so on).Passing the information through the medium will make it easier for people to accept it and speed up the spread of information.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The important thing about media literacy is that it prevents us from being influenced by misinformation or biased information. The reason why some high-profile self-media users can gain many followers is because they can express correct values and opinions. And the values and opinions they convey will help us establish our own position without being affected by misinformation.

WHY IS IT DISMISSED?

It is dismissed because the importance of media literacy is not known to many people. There are still many false statements and untrue information on social media. And use these negative information to hurt and slander other people, which makes it impossible for many people to establish correct values.

WHY SHOULD YOU AIM FOR VARIED VIEWS BUT THE FACTUAL CONSENSUS IN YOUR PLN?

On the Internet, it is normal for people to have different ideas. I am not sure that my idea is correct. The idea of others is wrong. This requires us to reach a real consensus in PLN. People in PLN can think more from different perspectives and can connect them to their own perspectives. In this process, the understanding of the problem has been supplemented. However, all opinions need to be based on factual consensus to ensure that people will not be misled by false information with strong personal biases.

Explore the video provided and reflect on the themes of a PLN in a professional capacity.

In the video, I learned that Brad Baker believes that PLN can help build a harmonious community and encourage people to care about each other. Brad Baker has established a professional social network by participating in some activities. And the positive views that come out through these activities are worth learning. On the other hand, PLN allows people to challenge each other, because there is no geographical restriction, we can hear everyone’s voice through the Internet, some of whom hold opinions different from ours. But in this way, everyone can express their opinions and voices, so that everyone can build a better communication space. We can listen to different voices while sharing opinions. This can also expand PLN and make PLN more diverse and inclusive.

Which social media platforms are beneficial in education?

I think there are two types of social platforms that are good for education. The first is social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.). “theorizes that technology is reshaping the ways humans create, store and distribute knowledge.” (Veletsianos & Couros, 2010;2014;)In combination with the world we live in now, social media platforms are us The best way to create, store and disseminate knowledge. We can learn about the PLN established by people in the same industry or in the same field through social media platforms. Of course, I think active participation will make learning more efficient. Active sharing and listening to opinions and active participation in discussions are all beneficial. Way of learning. But we must also pay attention to determining the authenticity and reliability of the source of information. Because social media can share and disseminate information at will, we sometimes receive false information. The second is professional learning social platforms (MOOC, Quora, Coursera iTunes U, etc.). These are platforms that provide online education. I think they are more professional than social media platforms in terms of professionalism. You can find countless resources on the platform, including courses from famous schools and related learning materials. You can directly establish contact with professionals to solve the problems encountered in the study more effectively and save time. The benefits of using social media platforms to develop education are effective and convenient.

Consider the equality that exists when all have the same platform to engage community dialogues.

I think learning in an equal environment is conducive to our learning. Because when we encounter problems that we don’t understand, others will seriously consider the problems we put forward, and we will also seriously consider the problems others put forward. And each of us has the right to express ourselves freely, and we can learn more only when people have different opinions and are discussed.

What are the benefits of a diverse and inclusive PLN in social media sharing that understands where you are coming from with messaging that impacts the community?

The advantage of having a diverse and inclusive PLN is that we can understand different national cultures, ideas, religions, and beliefs. Regardless of different ethnic backgrounds, genders, languages, etc., an inclusive and diverse PLN also creates a wide range of learning opportunities for others, not only increasing the knowledge of others from all over the world, but also allowing people to open their hearts and learn about the world Different cultures.

Consider the audiences and how we adapt our messaging accordingly.

In this most popular social media era, we must understand the audience’s preferences and the most popular topics at the moment and publish them in a form that the audience likes more. For example, short video (Tik Tok) can not only increase our traffic but also quickly deliver the content we want to deliver. But we must ensure that the information released is authentic and reliable. Because this is the most important point in dissemination of information.

Research our guest and see how they leveraged their network into a campaign.

When researching our guest Markiel Simpson, we can see that his PLN is very diverse and inclusive. He actively participated in many community and political activities and made speeches for people of color there. The sharing and discussion of this view has also been recognized by most people and attracted many people with the same ideas to join his team. This not only got a lot of attention from the society, but also made his later election campaigns easier.

How do notable individuals use social media?

I think the social media accounts of celebrities are different from the social media accounts of ordinary people. Because they have many fans, they will have a certain impact on those who follow them. So what they release is more of a voice with positive energy for society. They can also publish knowledge in some professional fields, but the purpose of publishing this knowledge is to share it with those in need rather than for money.

What are the benefits of being in the public eye and having a PLN?

The advantage of entering the public eye is that it can attract more people with the same interests and increase more people who like your content posted on social media and follow you. This will make it easier for your social media to connect with the public. For example, if the content you post is in the field of photography. Then when the content you publish is affirmed by the public, you will become a celebrity in the field of photography. You may get some opportunities and some business cooperation.

Building community with online tools provided by the employer can be limiting, what are the perceived restrictions and benefits?

I think the online community tools provided by employers are a good way to communicate with employees. On this platform, it is more about discussing some problems in daily work. Therefore, this platform can well separate your work and life. But you have to pay attention to your words, and not to work with personal emotions and say some negative words. Even if your thinking is different from other employees, you still need to pay attention to your words, because the employer will see what you say.

Delivering information in a connected society requires verifiable resources, how to build a PLN to rely on?

When we build a reliable PLN, we need to pay attention to the authenticity of the content we publish because this information is for the general public. The second is that when other people communicate, we need to verify the authenticity of other people’s identities. Doing so can also prevent online fraud and protect network security.

How do those, who are veteran storytellers, minimize risk in sharing misinformation?

When we tell a story, we must ensure the authenticity of the content, and we need to be responsible for what we say. So I think citing sources can minimize the sharing of misinformation.

How would you create a PLN prior to engaging a social media campaign on a topic of your choice?

I think before creating my own PLN, we must determine what the social media theme I am developing. My spare time is basically spent in the gym. I have been working out for 6 years. So I think I will post some photos of my fitness habits on social media accounts and share my fitness experience with other people who also like fitness or are interested in fitness. I may also occasionally post some videos in order to find some like-minded fitness partners.

Choose a topic, consider your audiences, and consider how you would create a social media campaign leveraging your PLN.

As a fitness enthusiast who has been working out for 6 years, my fans may be people who are interested in fitness or people who are just starting to work out. With this in mind, I want to create a social media event, which is less academic but more practical and more suitable for amateurs. For example, my activity can be to form a communication group to share knowledge and experience in fitness, or to share their daily fitness meals and health knowledge. This exchange group can enrich everyone’s knowledge and get better and better in terms of their figure.

How diverse is your existing PLN?

I believe my PLN is fairly diverse right now. As an International student, I have to quite separated social networks, one in Canada and the other back in China, which are constantly providing me very different information on a daily basis. On certain topics and matters, these two social networks actually put me into two angles of views. Therefore, I think my understanding on certain things is more critical. Closely connected to the previous point, as I am a bilingual, I actually have a broader access to not only knowledge and information in English, but also in Chinese. In addition, although I have been to Canada for couple years already, but I am still meeting new people and organizations every day, which also contribute to my PLN.

In your PLN, are you learning from a variety of voices, or are you the loudest in the room?

I have always been a good listener, I believe this is part of my personality as I always try to collect as much as information until I feel confidence and comfortable enough to respond. My experience in Canada also taught me to be more confident and willing to share opinion. More importantly, when interacting with others, we should be wise and sensitive to know when to listen and when to share, so that we are promoting the both-way-traffic communication.

Do you participate in a silo of information sharing (similar themes or wide range of interests)?

I used to be quite comfortable with a silo of information because it make me more confident on a certain topic. However, after I left my hometown, and study and live abroad, I started to realize how different people could be from each other. If I want to be friends with others, being to self-centered is not a good idea, instead, I should know a little about everything so that I can easily participate in different conversation.

How can you use a diverse PLN to broaden your view of inclusion?

Our initial understanding about a something or a new term is always based on our personal knowledge, experience, cultural background, etc. However, with the iteration of personal information, our point of view is likely to change. At the first glance of the idea – inclusion and inclusive education, I got this basic notion that it is about including everyone into the system, but after I watch the video and the book, I got a much deeper understanding about this topic. Especially after taking to classmates, this idea has become more structural in my mind.

In your professional setting of choice, do you think inclusion is actively embraced?

With the progress of globalization and the rapid development of the Internet, I believe almost every professional field is requiring us to be more inclusive than before. For instance, the world of business and economy has become much more diverse and creative than decades ago. E-commerce platforms actually is not something new anymore, but many sub-forms are generating from the earth of e-commerce. In China, because of the influence of pandemic, millions of brick-and-mortar stores were shut down, and the young employees of these places turned to the battlefield of the Internet, but they had very different choices: living- streaming e-commerce, game commentator, video content creator, online Tarot divination service and so on. The world itself is becoming more diverse, and the customers are always looking for something new and creative.

How has your thinking about inclusion and PLN evolved after reviewing the videos and readings?

For me, two things are the main takeaways for me. First, education is not just something teachers preform in school, but it is a matter of the whole community. If we want to build a better future for our children, everyone has to contribute to the progression. Next, when we put the different methods/ models of the evolution of inclusion into a time line, it is much easier to understand the logic of the development. According to Moore, we should not view inclusion as an end of the process, but it may be just one of the phases, and we probably can still do better in the future. In addition, the achievement we see in one community is not going to be suitable for another one. Education is also a product, which need to be localized to fit into a new market/environment.

What digital platforms are students currently using to develop their professional network?

Students mostly use Google drive to develop their professional network. Google drive is a great tool for students to complete their group works. Group members can see each others learning progress and having discuss to better complete their work. These institutional digital platforms do help students to accomplish work and learn about knowledge or information that is helpful a lot for their works.

What could the student consider in expanding their professional learning network?

There are many great platform to expanding our professional learning network. But students need to consider how to protect their personal information. Students should try to avoid posting sensitive information or content containing private information.

How does data privacy and security limit and/or promote a PLN?

In order to ensure data privacy and security, we will set access rights to important information. I think the access setting restriction is a reason that limited PLN. To ensure our privacy, I do not suggested anyone to put too much personal information or important documents on the Internet.

In your network how can you create a digital identity/ reputation?

I will share my strengths, my career and my hobbies on the Internet. Establish my digital identity by sharing personal information.

Here is my V&R Map
